why 'musak'?

The name musak goes back to the mid-1990s, when I first started using dial-up bulletin boards and needed an online handle.

It was a play on muzak, the word that had become shorthand for the background music you might hear in a lift, a shop or while waiting on hold: music that was there, but which you were not really expected to pay much attention to. "musak" seemed an appropriately self-deprecating name for whatever nonsense I was putting online at the time.

I reused the name as I moved from bulletin boards onto the early internet and, for a few years, it became the name I used online. I don't really use it any more, except to maintain the archive of things originally published under it. Which is what your looking at now.

The same idea sits behind the site's tagline, "random musings that somebody may be listening to". It was deliberately a little dismissive: thoughts sent out into the background, perhaps noticed by somebody, perhaps not. Nobody was supposed to take it too seriously

And, several decades later, they're still here and I think the name is even more relevant today, most of what we write online isn't of that much importance, and we should't take our own words too seriously.
