Shrewsbury is what I would probably regard as my home town. I wasn't born there (in fact, I didn't live there until I was 14) and I don't live there now (I went to University at 19 and never really went back to live there). Those formative years, however, from 14-19 took place in Shrewsbury. My parents still live there and I go back regularly. So, this is a collection of things about the town I call home.
It's thought that the area was settled in the 5th century by refugees from the nearby Roman City of Wroxeter but the most recognisable parts of the town's history come from The Normans when the Castle (1074) and the Abbey (1083) were founded.
According to shrewsburyguide.info, "the castle was built on a defensive site occupying the only land entry into Shrewsbury. The rest of the town being enclosed by a loop in the River Severn. Later the settlement was walled for added protection, the remains of which can be found throughout the town, most notable on the side of the town gardens alongside the river"
Boarding Wales, the Welsh made repeated attempts to capture the town but didn't succeed. It's also thought that Edward I convened the first English Parliament at Acton Burnell Castle in 1263 with sessions at Shrewsbury Abbey.

Shrewsbury Abbey at Flickr - [September 27, 2004]
I didn't want this site to become a site full of my photographs but I couldn't resist posting another one from my weekend back in Shrewsbury.
Lord Hill's Mighty Tower - [September 26, 2004]
I love the colours on this picture. Although it was taken early in the morning (at least, early for a Sunday) the colours are fantastic. And what's more it's been taken with my Treo's mobile camera which isn't the greatest...
