category entries | Films (aka Movies)

I don't go the cinema anywhere near as often as I would like to. I really enjoy the whole cinematic experience: the lights going down, the popcorn, the trailers and the anticipation of the main feature. Here, I am trying to keep a record of the films I have seen but, as you can see, I've not been able to get there as much as I would like to.

Collected Entries for Category "Films (aka Movies)":

Brokeback Mountain - [January 07, 2006]
What should I say about this movie? [0 comments]

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory - [August 14, 2005]
I loved Johnny Depp in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. [0 comments]

Mr and Mrs Smith - [June 17, 2005]
Don't expect realism nor a movie that takes itself seriously. Expect a surprisingly entertaining cinema experinece.

Kinsey - [March 06, 2005]
Whereas biopics can be fawning and dull Kinsey is watchable and entertaining.

Closer - [March 04, 2005]
A mixed film with most cringe-worthy chat room flirtation that I've ever seen. Sadly, not recommended.

Garden State - [January 12, 2005]
Certainly not the best film ever but it was a promising work for Braff and I'll be looking our for more.

Polar Express - [January 09, 2005]
An all new Christmas classic movie and all the better for being seen in a IMAX 3D cinema.

The Incredibles - [January 02, 2005]
The super heros are having a mid-life crisis in a great animated film from Pixar.

House Of Flying Daggers - [December 30, 2004]
Visually stunning both in terms of photography and the settings. The fight sequences well choreographed and executed and, overall it's very stylised. [0 comments]

Napoleon Dynamite - [December 29, 2004]
I like films with a plot and Napoleon Dynamite is missing much of one but somehow the offbeat comedy works in a subtle - not laugh out loud - way.

The Day After Tomorrow - [June 05, 2004]
The message to all of Planet Earth is, of course, corrupted to work for the film and lost after the first third. But that doesn't make any difference. [0 comments]

Troy - [May 30, 2004]
Sadly, not as great as I had hoped for a movie on such a big scale. [0 comments]

50 First Dates - [April 09, 2004]
A second good movie in two days! [0 comments]

The Station Agent - [April 08, 2004]
The Station Agent was a superb film given that very little happens. [0 comments]

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - [January 10, 2004]
Finally I got round to seeing The Lord of The Rings: The Return of the King and what a superb film it is. The acting, in particular, is outstanding.

Love Actually - [January 01, 2004]
This is really an inoffensive, somewhat amusing, light-hearted, feel-good British comedy.

S.W.A.T. - [December 13, 2003]
An action movie on a plane? Well, Colin Farrell passes the time well.

Buffalo Soldiers - [July 27, 2003]
Sadly, this film did not live up to the promise

I Capture the Castle - [June 14, 2003]
I film that surprised me. [0 comments]

Luster - [April 12, 2003]
There's plenty of sex, a rock-star who feeds off the talents of others in Luster at the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.

End Game - [April 09, 2003]
Normally, I don't watch films with so much violence (there are scenes of rape and some horrific beatings) but it's filmed/directed in a way that's does keep you watching.

Leaving Metropolis - [April 04, 2003]
This film is basically a gay love triangle

The Recruit - [March 29, 2003]
I wasn't sure what to expect of The Recruit but I thought it was fantastic

Far From Heaven - [March 17, 2003]
Far from Heaven is a strange film set in a place called Hartford in 1957 and it really does look like it

Adaptation - [March 09, 2003]
Unfortunately, I do think that while it's clever it's also confusing. Those who understand more about the screen writing process or the struggles of the author may get ore out of it.

Haunted Castle - [March 01, 2003]
The stunning effects in this film really to surround you. It really was a superb experience and remind me that I should go to the IMAX more often.

About Schmidt - [February 23, 2003]
Jack Nicholson plays Warren R. Schmidt who has just retired from his job and doesn't quite know what to do with his life

Catch Me If You Can - [February 23, 2003]
If it wasn't true, nobody would believe it

The Hours - [February 21, 2003]
This isn’t a happy film. Many of the scenarios are quite sad but it isn’t really a depressing film either.

Daredevil - [February 16, 2003]
I was very surprised that I did not enjoy Daredevil more. It’s darker and more disturbing than many a super-hero flick and while this, for some, may be the appeal, it just didn’t do it for me. It’s also oddly...

Lost In La Macha - [January 22, 2003]
Narrated by Jeff Bridges, Lost in La Mancha, had access to the whole production and, as such, we get a fascinating tale of movie making

8 Mile - [January 19, 2003]
I have no idea if this in any way reflects real life in downtown Detroit. I have no clue if rap culture is, in any way, well served by his film but it is a great movie which I thoroughly recommend

The Good Girl - [January 18, 2003]
Good. But not good enough.

Bowling for Columbine - [January 05, 2003]
What a fantastic film! Michael Moore’s Bowling for Columbine is as good a piece of film making as any I have seen for several years.

Chicago - [January 04, 2003]
What a cinematic treat it is, thoroughly deserving many of the great reviews it's been having on the web

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - [January 02, 2003]
I realise that, above all, these really are movies for kids.

The Lord of The Rings - [December 31, 2002]
There are, perhaps predictably, few surprises in this second film. However, it remains a stunning piece of cinema and one that I will certainly see again and again.

Die Another Day - [December 15, 2002]
Die Another Day is as cheesy as many a Bond.

Donnie Darko - [November 02, 2002]
The Guardian said, Is it a horror film? A black comic parable of Generation X angst? A teen drama with a psycho edge? If not, what the hell is it?

My Big Fat Greek Wedding - [October 06, 2002]
My Big Fat Greek Wedding was something of a hit and miss film. You learned much about the Greek (lead) character, Toula, and her inter-family relationships. But you learned very little about her love interest, Ian. If the point of...

Matt Damon is Jason Bourne - [September 12, 2002]
Matt Damon is pumped up in The Bourne Identity

Half-Hearted Bollywood - [August 26, 2002]
You know when you don't go to the cinema for, what seems like, an age and then you suddenly go quite a lot? No, well, I do this on-off thing with cinema quite a lot. Yesterday, following on from my...

Not Hilarious or Surprising - [August 25, 2002]
"Strange, zany, generally amusing and very likeable without actually being all that hilarious or surprising, Men In Black II relies heavily on familiarity with and affection for the original. Fans of that film, who are simply content with more of...

Scooby Thoughts - [July 03, 2002]
Looking back, I really do have to say Scooby Doo was a great film. If one of the goals of conema is to enetrtain then this was a successfuly film. If another of the goals of cinema is to provide...
